Overview

This event will promote and sell the works of Mitsunori Sakamoto, however plain Washi sheets will also be available. Washi will be from the recognized UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2014, as well as strictly selected Washi from all over Japan.

The opening reception will feature musician Etsuko Sakai and performer Sanyutei Ema who will introduce the beauty of Japanese culture to New Yorkers.

Mitsunori Sakamoto’s art’s theme is “Japan”. His work includes topics such as Japanese landscape, scenery, atmosphere, scent, and sense.

Because the exhibition is taking place in the center of the world’s art scene, New York City, the theme of the show will be focused on Tokyo, Japan.

He is introducing the scenes of different seasons of Tokyo, such as the cherry blossoms in the dawn and its petals dancing along with the carp in the pond.

Kakejiku, or “Hanging Scroll”, is a seasonable painting or calligraphy mounted with silk fabric edges.

Sakamoto shot the material of his Kakejiku with a camera, cropped on a computer, reprinted and hung it as a picture on the scroll.

By making his artwork solely out of pictures, Sakamoto has mimicked a Kakejiku with his art.

Etsuko Sakai is a cultivator of Japanese traditions who makes use of authentic Japanese practices such as Kohdo (Japanese scents), Kyudo (Japanese archery), Sado (Japanese tea ceremony, especially “Sencha”) and etiquette. She is an “expert of WA”, applying the secrets of etiquette and Edo period wisdom.

“Kamikiri” is one of the popular forms of entertainment in which paper is transformed to art by cutting with scissors. Sanyutei Ema is one of the very few female “Kamikiri” performers.

A demonstration of papermaking techniques will take place.

Visitors are free to participate in papermaking workshops (at scheduled times), creating their original Washi.

ABOUT WASHI

Washi - Japanese papermaking experience | COLLABO JAPONICA

History of Washi

It was in 610 A.D. about 1400 years ago when paper was introduced to Japan. According to the Japan Secretary, “Nihon Shoki”, a monk of Koguryeo, Doncho conveyed the way of paper making with an Indian Ink. However, there is a theory that paper making itself was conducted before that.

Initially, washi had been used to transcribe sutra, family register, law, and the like.
As the era went on, Sho, “Waka” Traditional Japanese Poetry and Chinese Poetry were spread among aristocrats.

Until then, “Kozo” or mulberry, or Ganpi was used as a raw material for paper, however, “Mitsumata” was also popular to penetrate into people’s lives and later on became useful in life’s necessities such as “shoji” or Japanese door paper material, “Fusuma” or bran or umbrella. Thus, making paper spread all over Japan. Original Japanese paper was formed, through the different regional characteristics and various manufacturing methods, from more than 1000 years tradition. Thus, Hosokawashi (Saitama), Honminoushi (Gifu), Settshuhanshi (Shimane) were registered in the UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in November, 2014 as “Washi, craftwork of Japanese hand-made paper”

Material

“Nagashi-suki’s” technical characteristic is a mixture of raw materials from “Kozo” or mulberry, or Ganpi, Mitsumata into “Sunset hibiscus (Neri)”. We can take advantage of the stronger and tougher paper through the stickiness lying on the roots of the sunset hibiscus.

The effect on paper by “Nagashi-suki”

Moving the bamboo blind entangles fiber with each other. The horizontal movement back and forth gives the fiber direction. Due to the stickiness of sunset hibiscus, water falls slowly from a bamboo blind, making it possible to adjust its thickness.

Eco-friendly

The main raw material used in washi is cultivated in the farm. You can continue to use the raw material after cutting its wood, without destroying nature and forests, because buds come out after that.

Durable and Long-lasting

It is difficult to degrade the paper because it only uses neutral natural materials. Depending on the state of preservation, like books in the Shousouin in Nara remain in good condition, even after 1,000 years.

Air permeability, translucency and elastic property

There are a lot of gaps in Washi, only because long fibers are intertwined and joined, to form a sheet. Air and light can penetrate through the gaps. We can also moisten and stretch the paper because its fibers are long, and even if we fold it repeatedly, it does not get torn easily.
